Well, you can legally tint the back side windows of your car up to 5%, and you can also do the same for the rear windows as long as you have side mirrors. But, don’t even think about putting 5% tint on the passenger window or front window - that’s a no-no! Unless, of course, your car qualifies for an exemption.

  1. Window Tint Limit: Texas law allows for a maximum window tint of 25% VLT (Visible Light Transmission) on the front side windows and back side windows.

  2. Windshield Tint Limit: The windshield may have a non-reflective tint applied to the top 6 inches of the windshield only.

  3. Side Mirrors: Dual side mirrors are required if back window is tinted.

  4. Restricted Colors: No red, amber, or blue tints are allowed in Texas on any vehicle window except for medical exemptions approved by the Department of Public Safety (DPS).

  5. Medical Exemptions: Individuals with certain medical conditions may be eligible for an exemption from the standard window tinting laws in Texas, allowing them to apply darker tints than normally permitted by law if they obtain approval from DPS first.

Tinting your car windows in Texas is totally legal, as long as you don’t go too dark. You can get away with a light tint, but if it’s too dark you could get pulled over and fined. So just keep it on the lighter side and you’ll be good to go!
